side control drilling

When on bottom, turn in and look to reguard. Elbow-knee escape if top attempts to mount.

When on top, stay tight.

whip it real good

This walk up private focused on whipping up from half guard. It's a terrible part of my game--which is no good because half guard happens a lot. It was good to get some practice.

Private Class

Today's private drilled some guard passes.  It was good fun and helpful instruction.

We drilled take downs then worked some armbars:
1.  A guillotine of the elbow
2.  A kimura
3.  Spin into the armbar

I'm keeping my head!

We drilled guillotine choke defenses today.  There are two types:  arm in and arm out.  The arm in defense involved a toma nage-ish take down that was slick.

Triangles

I roll with a guy with slick triangles.  Now, maybe, I'll be ready.

It's Judo, and I Helped!

This Judo class was a fun experience.  I helped with the kids class and participated with the "adults" (who were really more like teenagers).  Still, it gave some nice time to focus on throws and give back to the sport.

Class number 225

This was a private with the big guy.  We rolled, and I got some great feedback.  This capped off a full week of training (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday).  Nice!

This class worked on big punch defense (with the hip toss added).

Once on the ground, we drilled some mount escapes including open mount to armbar.

My OCD is spilling over to my child. I will begin to track little one's classes.

no shoes. no gi. no problem.

This no gi class turned into open mat. Lots of rolling.

Guard Gets

From an escaped position, bottom's guard game can hit armbars, triangles, and omoplatas a plenty.

Beginner's Class with a first-timer

This class worked a lot of self-defense.  We did a hip toss, bump and roll, and guard pass.

Same As The Last

This class was the same as the previous one.  The review was great; I was able to work with a beginner.

Bumpin and Shrimpin

This class dealt with with mount.  We can bump and roll and mounted opponent.  This will likely create space that we can shrimp out of if the roll isn't there.

Guard Pass and Rolling

This was a good, full class.  After some guard passing drills, there was lots of rolling.  It was cool being able to roll with a few purple belts.

Wrestler Defense

We worked a bottom game in this class, but it was a bottom game in response to a particularly oriented top game.  Big with more strength than jiu-jitsu skills may do some of the following:
The Can Opener:  This can be defended by swimming one's arms out.  From there a sweep often presents itself.  Another defense is the armbar.
Wrapping up bottom's head and tripodding:  We drilled a variant of the elevator sweep from this position.

The hip work required for the above was giving some folks problems, so a portion of class was spent drilling this movement.

More Gentleness

Lots of good work in Judo today.  I found myself more comfortable with some throws.  I also found myself needing a good north/south escape.

Wondering more

I just wonder.

More Passes

Today was more guard work.  It began with some toma nage work.  The throw is not super high percentage, but the worst that could happen is that uki ends up in your guard.

We also drilled an armbar from standing that was similar in action to the toma nage.

In the event that either the throw or the armbar is blocked, we worked on ways to pass the guard when we end up in this spot.

Throws and Mounts

This basics class worked a couple hip tosses.

The focus, then, turned to the ground.  We worked a bump sweep of a mounted opponent.  Then, when the bump fails, we drilled a shrimping move to reguard.

1312#214

Guard Passing

Class began with some head lock work; I paired with a first-timer.

We, then, worked guard passes and tested them in live drills.

Someone's standing in my guard.

We worked takedowns for a while which was a brutal way to shake off the holiday rust.  :/
O Soto Gari then O Soto Gari to Tai Otoshi was on the menu.

We drilled the flower sweep as well as an armbar counter when someone stands in your guard.
