Well.
I'm not quite Helio Gracie. Figures.
So, I did this tournament, and I'm working on being positive. So far; so good. I didn't do what I wanted to do to my opponent. I didn't even keep him from doing what he wanted to do to me. I tapped; twice.
But, I accomplished my mission of staying calm. I know it's crazy, but I actually don't feel bad with how the day went. I was present for every moment of my matches. You see, in my other tournaments, things were moving so fast that I couldn't keep up--I wasn't fully aware of what was going on. This time, I was calm with the stand up. My opponent pulled guard (in both our matches). I knew what was happening, and I knew what I wanted to do, and I did a lot of what I wanted to do.
In the end, I tapped to triangle choke. (Both matches were almost a carbon copy of the other.) I was close to passing his guard; then, things would have been totally different--I know it. Props to the kid who won, but I feel fine with what I did. I'm getting more comfortable with tournaments, and that's a good thing.

I can only win.
The alternate title for this post was, "I am Helio Gracie." :)
I entered a small (I believe it to be small) tournament. My official weight was 199.6 (without the gi). Later this month, I want to compete at 195 (with the gi).
The thing is, I'm totally nervous. I feel like I'm still competing against nerves, anxiety, and uncomfortableness. In time, I'll transition to competing against actual people (I hope). For now, though, I feel like I'm my own most daunting competition.
That got my thinking: How can I practice positive self-talk? I believe I've talked myself into this win-win situation:
-I do what I want to my opponent, and I win.
-I keep my opponent from doing what he wants to do (he doesn't submit me), and I win.
-Things don't go my way, but I have a nice time (in retrospect) and get some valuable experience, and I still win. (This is my euphemism for, "I get tapped.") :)
Now to just stay calm and positive!

We drilled some neat take downs. One was a harai goshi from an opponent's failed double leg. It took some getting used to, but I finally got it.
We, then, drilled lots of elbow-knee escapes and counters to when the top guy hops into side control.

Not Scientific or a Strict Pattern
I'm not obsessing about belts, etc. I'm very committed to the journey, etc. I gladly accept the fact that it takes 10 plus years to get a black belt. Still, I'm curious about a quantitative approach to jiu jitsu rank progression.
10 years of training once a week is not the same as 10 years of daily training, etc. Something that motivates me is calculating the next step in the path. There are 20 steps to one's black belt (beginning at white and getting four stripes on it plus blue, purple, and brown). I'm not sure how much will be required for stripes and belts. Perhaps an average of 75 classes will be required between each step. (In most cases, stripes on white and blue belts come more quickly.) This sets the bar at 1,500 hours (which is not scientific or a strict pattern).
If one trains 3 hours a week (which boils down to a single class every other day), he will get about 150 classes per year (allowing for gym closures, vacations, sickness, etc.). With 10 years of consistent training, one might be able to get his BJJ black belt.

The Week that Was May 7th
This was an epic kind of week. I was able to train Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday--this included a private and a seminar. I enjoyed assisting with a kid's class and working on basic self-defense with a pair of beginners.
I worked on being more active, and I paid off in my rolls. I'm happy to say that I didn't tap this week. My defense is becoming more reliable, and it's giving me a basis to work offense.
I hope to get to 300 classes by my birthday on May 21. That will require another busy week, but it will be a nice accomplishment.

Attacking and Defending the Turtle
This private was a nice review of this position. From turtle, an underhook can be gotten. This makes re-guarding very likely.
A nice armbar can be gotten on a turtled opponent if you isolate the arm (gain wrist control) and press the elbow against your chest.

Basics
This class worked on big-punch defense with a take down. From the guard, we worked on finishing the americana and taking the back.
I tapped twice today. Once was to a guillotine from a failed shot. My opponent said that he hits that a lot, so it was hard to feel bad about getting caught in a guy's money move. The second tap came from a less-than-perfect triangle. A bud and I worked some stand up; I hit a decent throw and landed in mount. We, then, stood up and worked some more take downs. He pulled me into an armbar which I defended, but he had my sleeve. From there, he worked into a triangle. I really didn't want to tap, but it was claustrophobic; I bailed.
22712#245
PS. I won my third match on points.

Dis what's up.
Things seem to be going well with this hobby I'm obsessed about. Here's what's up.
I'm come a long way in being more aggressive, but I need to do more. Of course, I'm not talking about being a bully or jerk. I just need to go in for the kill a bit more and stop being comfortable in bad spots. My last tournament (which I've kinda put off talking about) was a bad display of passivity. I was nervous standing up, so I tried to take the match down. I ended up in bad spots and stayed there til I did something dumb (or the other guy did something good). I went 0-2, and it didn't take much time, either. Thank you very much for showing up. Dumb me. :(
Since then, things are better; I say reservedly. I'm still not a natural born killer; I probably still settle for bottom too much, but I'm aware of it and working on it. I'm starting more rolls from standing, and I've noticed that when I do so, I usually wind up in better positions. Cool.
On a related note, I want to up the Judo practices and take the next step toward my next level. I'm really only interested in Jiu Jitsu promotions, but I'll accept anything else along the way. Spring and Summer 2012 will be a time of more focus on Judo while most of the world ignores it in the games.
A friend and I are walking through the Gracie Combatives course. This is a pretty legit curriculum. It's a good opportunity to cultivate love of Jiu Jitsu in someone who otherwise wouldn't be able to train. Again, I'm only really interested in promotions at my home gym, but I'm game for whatever else is along the way. This surely isn't going to hurt me. C'mon man, it's the Gracies! We are a quarter of the way through it and enjoying the lessons and time together.
I recently attended a 10th Planet JJ seminar. What? Don't hate. Didn't you read the above!? I would like to improve my nogi game, and I'm not turned off by Bravo's approach. I signed up for his website, too, because dat's how 10 do. And, it's really cheap. ;) I discovered a network of undergrounders who practice the 10th planet system, and they're close by. I plan to pay them some visits off the grid. My gym offers nogi classes, and I plan to step up my attendance of those and maybe even inquire about a private involving grappling with punches--small ones; very small.
The folks who hosted Bravo plan to have him back in a few months. We'll probably meet again.
If I could just figure out a way to quit my job and double my income, I would be able to fund my mini fight quest. Ohs well. I'll just do the best I can. By the way, I also want my daughter to stay steady with her BJJ. She's the future.
I love this stuff; that's what's up!
Jump around
We practiced jumping guard. It's okay to do if it's an intro to another move.
We worked knee-on-belly with a cradle choke ending. For when the choke isn't there (and knee-on-belly closes up), we worked chest pressure on an opponent on his side. This position often results in armbars.
The rolls were good today; real good by my standards. I'm staying much more calm. My defense remains good (I didn't tap today). My offense is coming along--in each of my matches I showed decent offense. I feel like things are heading in the right direction.

No Gi chokes
We drilled no gi chokes on a turtles opponent. A key principle was to insert the choking arm deep to allow for other side hookage. I kept thinking of putting my bicep around my opponent's neck. That gave me the depth needed to choke sukas out.

Gracie Combatives #1
This lesson worked a trap and roll mount escape.
Bridge and roll an opponent by 1) trapping his hand, 2) defending the punch, or 3) using his arm (wrapped around your head). Hook his foot, then finish the bridge and roll.
The above lands one inside of his opponent's guard, so this guard pass was taught.
If the guard is closed, one knee comes to the middle, the other knee opens like a door. We push our opponent's leg down and finish the pass.
If the guard is open, we simply push one leg down and pass to mount.
Our bonus material also included:
-a reguard from side control
-half guard work
-reguard from half guard
-get the underhook from half guard; throw it off, and take the back
-a single leg take down from half guard

We drilled some wrestling takedowns. My love for the single leg was nurtured.
We, then, worked a back game. Details of the rear-naked choke were explained. Also, an armbar from the back was drilled.

whip it real good
This walk up private focused on whipping up from half guard. It's a terrible part of my game--which is no good because half guard happens a lot. It was good to get some practice.

It's Judo, and I Helped!
This Judo class was a fun experience. I helped with the kids class and participated with the "adults" (who were really more like teenagers). Still, it gave some nice time to focus on throws and give back to the sport.

Wrestler Defense
We worked a bottom game in this class, but it was a bottom game in response to a particularly oriented top game. Big with more strength than jiu-jitsu skills may do some of the following:
The Can Opener: This can be defended by swimming one's arms out. From there a sweep often presents itself. Another defense is the armbar.
Wrapping up bottom's head and tripodding: We drilled a variant of the elevator sweep from this position.
The hip work required for the above was giving some folks problems, so a portion of class was spent drilling this movement.

More Passes
Today was more guard work. It began with some toma nage work. The throw is not super high percentage, but the worst that could happen is that uki ends up in your guard.
We also drilled an armbar from standing that was similar in action to the toma nage.
In the event that either the throw or the armbar is blocked, we worked on ways to pass the guard when we end up in this spot.
